Tortuguero National Park is one of the most popular parks in Costa Rica. It is located in the province of Limon, at the north-east Atlantic coast, about 80 kilometers north of the Caribbean city Limon. The park was founded in 1975 in order to protec the area. It also offers protection to the sea turtles that nest here from July to October.

The low-lying areas are exposed to short-term floods and heavy rainfall which created lakes, grass swamps, and forested swamps of brackish water. The intense humidity of the tropical forests is caused by the extreme rainfall and humid winds from the Caribbean area. More than 330 days of the year are cloudy but nice and warm!

In the Tortuguero National Park you will be able to spot a rich vegetation of about 400 tree species and 2,000 plant species. About half of all of the common bird species in Costa Rica (350) can be found here, as well as the jaguar, puma, ocelot, tapir, manatee, pekari, and many other mammals including numerous species of bats, possums, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates can be found in this area. Other mammals, such as nose bears, sloths, and raccoons can be found more in a young, secondary forest than here, because the forest in Tortuguero is denser and they have more natural enemies here.

Four species of sea turtles come to Tortuguero to lay their eggs, all of which are endangered. From June to October you will see green sea turtles coming to nest and from February until June you can see the leatherback turtles. The other types of turtle to be found here are the hawksbill and loggerhead turtles.

Turtle Nesting Tour

Tortuguero is considered the most important place in the western Caribbean for the Green Turtle nesting. The green turtle nesting is one of the most interesting natural phenomena. The process, is considered the most critical period in the biological cycle of the turtle since the females have to go to the beaches in large quantities and during more or less fixed times . These concentrations and the difficulty of travel on the sand, make these species very vulnerable to man and other predators. That is the reason why the Tortuguero National Park is interested in the protection of these marine species.
