The Best Activities in Costa Rica

This beautiful country is more than just beaches and chill vibes, there are many exciting activities you can do here in the rainforest, the cloud forest, the beach, the city, wherever you want! Check out our favourite activities below and decide which ones you would like to experience.

1. Arenal Volcano Waterfall & Hot Springs Tour

During this tour you will discover Arenal´s most beautiful spots. You will see the beautiful, hidden waterfall where you will be able to relax and swim in the fresh water. You will also enjoy the hot springs, which are naturally heated by the volcano. Bathing in these pools of different temperatures is truly a great experience!

2. Rio Perdido Canyoning Adventure

This tour in Guanacaste is for the real dare devils out there. This tour includes 15 platforms which are connected by trails, zip lines, a suspension bridge, a Tarzan swing over a waterfall and up and down rappelling. Swinging from platform to platform you will have never felt so free!

3. Ziplining in Monteverde

There are many different options for canopy tours in Monteverde, some include a Tarzan swing, some include the superman, all of which are a lot of fun to do. There are even bungee jumping opportunities for those who are real thrill seekers. You will definitely not be bored during your visit here.

4. White Water Rafting on the Pacuare River

This tour can be done as a way to travel between San José, La Fortuna, and Puerto Viejo, or as a day tour. You will raft down the Rio Pacuare on class II-III rapids, through the famous Pacuare River Gorge, and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding nature.

5. Catamaran Boat Tour

There are a few locations where you can do these types of tours. We love the Catamaran tour in Manuel Antonio. You will have the opportunity to go snorkeling and see the beautiful marine life, spot dolphins, and if the season is right whales too! This is the perfect way to spend a day on the water.

6. Surfing

Surfing is a very popular sport for tourists visiting Costa Rica. There are many places where you can ride some beautiful waves. If you are learning the Pacific coast is better in places like Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, Samara, and Manuel Antonio, as the waves are a lot easier and constant there than on the Caribbean coast. Once you know how to surf though, it is definitely worth visiting Puerto Viejo with its famous Salsa Brava surf.

7. Horseriding

There are many places where you can go horseriding along the coast or through the jungle. Some great places for horseriding are Samara, Santa Teresa, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, and the Rincon de la Vieja National Park. The horses are usually very calm and know the trails well, which allows you to sit back and enjoy the beautiful views!

8. Tortuguero National Park

Visiting this park is a must when coming to Costa Rica. This national park, located in the Caribbean coast is known for its lush rainforest and the long coastline where turtles come to nest and, during the right season, you can watch the babies hatch and make their way to the ocean. You can go kayaking through the canals of the park and spot a great variety of wildlife, or hike the trails and explore this magical place by foot.

9. Indigenous Tour

In the South Caribbean you can take tours of one or more days during which you get to know the indigenous, BriBri, people, their culture, and their lifestyle. It feels like entering a completely different world! They show you all of the medicinal plants and herbs they use, how they build their impressive houses, and how they make chocolate. It is a great experience and you will learn and do things you would have never thought you would!

10. Corcovado National Park

This park is considered one of the world´s most biodiverse regions. It is home to some of Costa Rica´s most rare animals, which you can all spot (or at least try to) during your visit here. It is a bit of a journey to get there, but most definitely worth it. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking nature and feel completely transported away from your daily life.

There are many more activities to do in Costa Rica, but we think these are the things you cannot miss out on!
