This place, nearby the harbour town Limon, is the place where Christoffel Columbus came to land in 1502 to christen the rich Costa Rican coast, because of its overwhelming natural kingdom and beauty. Even though a lot of forest has been cut down to make room for banana plantations and cattle breeding, there a lot of rainforest is still intact.

The colourful towns Cahuita and Puerto Viejo have a very relaxed, laid-back Caribbean vibe and the culture is completely different comparted to the rest of the country.

The inhabitants here are mainly from Afro-Caribbean descent, which can be seen in the language, music, and local cuisine.

Take a hike through the Cahuita National Park, the Manzanillo Gandoca National Park, visit he Jaguar Rescue Center or the Green Macaw Breeding Project or take a trip to one of the many waterfalls or an indigenous pre-Columbian town and learn how they live and how to make chocolate. You can also rent a bike and observe the the rasta culture, beautiful beaches, countless animals, and overwhelming jungle. Other popular activities here are surfing (whether you are a beginner or experienced, there are great waves for everyone!), snorkeling and diving.

Salsa Lesson

You will get to immerse yourself in Costa Rica's vibrant and friendly culture by learning to dance Like a local! Be sure to sign up for our dance lessons with a local instructor to get your feet moving to the beats of merengue, salsa, cumbia and a Costa Rican favorite: bachata. Most Costa Ricans learn to dance from an early age and one could say "it's in their blood..." Merengue is probably the style of music you'll hear most-often around Costa Rica and probably the easiest to learn how to dance to. It's a quick two-step pattern and the man is responsible for directing the woman with his right hand back and forth.

Cumbia is believed to come from Colombia, but Costa Ricans have put their own twist on how to dance to it. It's a mostly sideways step in a 1-2-3-4 count that Costa Ricans call the "Swing Criollo" that adds a special bounce on the step and goes a little faster. And then there's Salsa the sexiest of Latin dancing that originated in Cuba when you get to the Salsa part of the lesson, you'll be doing spins and turns!
